October ’19 Class Cancellations & Events

Ok squad, lets give you a rundown of our busy October.  First, the CrossFit Games Open is back.  At a totally different time of year than it ever has been.  And for the first time we get to host two Opens in one year!  Second, four of your classmates have qualified for and will be attending USAPL Raw Nationals in Chicago.  I cannot overstate how big of a deal this is.  So, with these two big happenings, we will be adjusting a few dates and times for October 2019.  After you read about those dates, please read below about the above mentioned Open and Raw Nationals.

October 2019 Class Cancellations

-reminders: starting this month there is NO MORE 10:30am class on Saturday mornings.  There will only be 9:30am from here on out.  

-No 8:30am Powerlifting classes on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

-The CrossFit Games Open will start Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 and will be one workout per week for 5 weeks, officially ending on Nov. 11, 2019.

-Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, NO 6:15pm or 7:15pm classes.  

-USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals will be start Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019-Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019.

-Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, NO 11am & 4pm classes

-Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, NO 11am classes

-Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, NO 11am classes 


The CrossFit Games Open

Questions people always have about this:

1)What is this again?

2)When is this done?

3)Can I do this?

4)Who is it for?

5)Why should I do this?

Answers we always give about this:

1)This is ONE workout each week for 5 weeks that is released by CrossFit HQ.  Everyone that is signed up for this will be doing the exact same workout, so you can directly compare your scores to anyone else on the planet (who is also signed up).  Each workout will have two MAIN variations, a RX version and a SCALED/MODIFIED version.

2)This is will be done here at Southern Maryland CrossFit.  At the affiliate you already attend.    The workouts get released each Thursday night at 8pm, and participants have until Monday night at 8pm to have completed the workouts and entered their scores.  But, as we have been the past few years, we will be hosting Friday Night Lights here from 5:45pm-7:45pm for the bulk of people to do the Open workout.  Those who cannot attend FNL due to scheduling conflicts should speak to the coaches about either doing the workouts on Saturday morning or Monday.

3)Yes, you can do this.  As we spoke about in the answer to #1, you can do this.  Even if you don’t have all the things you think you need before signing up.  Scaled movements in the past have included: single unders instead of double unders, jumping pullups instead of pullups, hand release pushups instead of handstand pushups, and bear crawl instead of handstand walk.

4)This is for anyone who wants to push themselves in a friendly, competitive way.  Anyone who wants to see what their body is capable of.  This is for everyone.  This is the best stepping stone to finding an even better version of yourself.  It costs $20.  You are going to have to do the workout anyway (because we will program it in), and you get to suffer through these with your classmates, and you may even get a sweet new Facebook profile pic out of the deal!

5)You should do this because it is one of the best ways to connect with your community.  Not just your community here at Southern Maryland CrossFit, but the Open is the feeder system for Southern Maryland Regionals, and you will be able to see what your friends from surrounding boxes are doing on the workouts.  You will be able to connect to the larger CrossFit community as well.  People you might follow on Instagram, friends who CrossFit in other states or countries.  This is one of the biggest judged competitions in the world.  And you can be a part of it!  Read more about it here!

USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals

Our powerlifting team competes in USA Powerlifting, the largest drug-free powerlifting association in the United States.  Currently, all of our lifters compete only raw, which means they can wear an IPF approved belt, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps when performing the judged competition lifts of squat, bench, and deadlift.  Our club registration number is: MD-2019-03.  Powerlifting meets are conducted in kilograms (kg), and one kilogram is 2.2lbs.

Of all the lifters in USAPL (22,000+),  less than 10% qualify and go to Raw Nationals (there are normally between 1,000-1,500 lifters).  Of those numbers, we have FOUR women who have met the qualifying numbers and will attending the 2019 Raw Nationals in Chicago from Oct. 16-21, 2019.  Former member and remote client Terri Farley will be competing in the Masters 2 (50-59) 63kg division, and this is her first year competing in powerlifting and her first time qualifying for Raw Nationals. Coach Amy Robinson is competing in the Masters 1 (40-49) 63kg division, this is also her first year competing in powerlifting and her first time qualifying for Raw Nationals as well. Tangie Gardner is competing in the Masters 1 (40-49) 72kg division, this is her second time qualifying for Raw Nationals. Kylie Robillard is competing in the Open 84+kg division, this is her second time qualifying for Raw Nationals.  So if you see these amazing ladies around, tell them how awesome you think it is, and how much justice they do to empowering strong women everywhere.  If you would like to support their out of pocket expenses to this event, click here.
